GWAS 2011: Opportunities and Challenges
Nature Genetics in association with Anhui Medical University in China, is pleased to announce the Hefei 2011 GWAS workshop.
Over the past six years, the genome-wide association study (GWAS) has emerged as a powerful design in identifying genetic variants that are associated with complex diseases/traits. More than 450 GWAS have been carried out and the associations of greater than 2000 SNPs or genetic loci were reported. It indeed has advanced our understanding on the genetic basis of those complex diseases and traits successfully. However, the current GWAS that focuses primarily on common SNPs only constitute a small portion of the total inherited risk of complex disease and the issue of how GWAS can benefit public health is still widely debated. Therefore, casting a wider net is very important, further studies should be warranted to investigate genetic determinants for complex diseases/traits, which could potentially provide insights into disease pathogenesis, and reveal novel therapeutic targets or strategies.
This workshop supported by Anhui Medical University in China and Nature Genetics, looks forward to the promises of GWAS, and will aim to address the following topics:
  • Translational and Clinical Perspectives of GWAS
  • GWAS in Chinese population
  • Evolution of GWAS
  • Beyond GWAS
This GWAS workshop will provide us unique insights for promoting the current GWAS from discovery of more causal disease variants to potential clinical application.
